Always a Sickly Kid - I’ve had bad asthma since I was kid. It prevented me from doing a lot of things I wanted to do – like sports, being outdoors, or basically anything that involved getting my heart rate up. I was always very sickly, and my inhaler stayed in my back pocket wherever I went. My asthma improved slightly as I got older, but not much. Then, in my last year of studies at UVIC, something changed.

Intense Back Pain - My major was in Chemistry and the workload was heavy. I started getting intense back pain from being bent over all the time, both from studying and being in the lab. My girlfriend (now my wife) was a nursing student and part-time aerobics instructor. She had a chiropractor in her class, and she began pestering me to go see her.

Nothing else I tried was working, so I decided to give it a try. Back then the approach to Chiropractic was very basic; a quick adjustment, and out the door you go. Well, after just a few treatments my back pain started to subside. But something else happened: my asthma got better – way better.

An Unexpected Result - I mentioned this to my chiropractor, and she said, “Well, you know your thoracic spine is where you’re having your pain and it supplies the adrenal glands and if you’re not releasing enough adrenaline, that will restrict your bronchioles. If we release the sublix (misalignment of the spine) with an adjustment and restore proper nerve flow, it will help your adrenaline levels return to normal.”

The Turning Point - That’s when I picked up a book and started reading about chiropractic medicine. It was a turning point in my life, and the reason I went to study at the Cleveland Chiropractic College. There I learned how the spine and the nerves have an impact on your whole body. Removing the irritation to the spinal nerve allows it to function more efficiently and can have transformative effects on your health and wellness – often unexpectedly – like with my asthma.

My Most Gratifying Work - I still carry an inhaler when I run, play hockey, work on our rural property in Saanichton, or just hang out with my wife and three kids – all the things I never thought I would do when I was younger. But now it is less of a leash than a reminder of how far I’ve come. As a chiropractor, I see this kind of transformation in my practice everyday, and it is the most gratifying aspect of my work.

Laura graduated from West Coast College of Massage Therapy in Victoria. While working in the field of accounting for 25 years, she found her passion for massage while taking a weekend course to gain confidence while giving her partner massages. She enjoyed the course so much that she promised herself that if she ever got a chance to go to WCCMT, she would do it. Four years later, her chance came, and the rest is history.

As a new RMT, Laura looks forward to continuing her education and learning new techniques and skills to incorporate into her practice. Laura believes in the value of relaxation as a therapeutic approach, but considers herself a “trigger point person”. Besides trigger point release, she incorporates myofascial release, Swedish techniques, soft tissue release, and stretching/strengthening into her treatments.

Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Laura has lived in Victoria, BC half her life. When not at work, she loves exploring the province: hiking with her dog, kayaking, camping, skiing and snowboarding. She is always in awe at the beauty of the many mountains, islands, beaches and rivers that make up this amazing place we call home.

Kyle spent the better part of the last decade in Edmonton where he eventually found Vicars School of Massage Therapy. Having a background in health and wellness from being a personal trainer, it felt like a eventual next step to become an RMT.

Being able to help others achieve their goals was what drew Kyle into personal training. As an RMT Kyle is able build upon that knowledge and provide a more diverse treatment to better suit the needs of a patient.

Originally from Toronto and only moving to Victoria in the last two years, Kyle has yet to explore all of the things that makes the island so great. Recommendations are always welcome!
